The notary process is an anti-fraud measure and helps assure involved parties that the document is authentic, trustable and legally-binding. Since January 11, 2024 the Apostille Convention entered into force, licensed lawyers and paralegals, not just Global Affairs Canada, can apostille documents certificates. The Canadian apostille is valid in all countries that are signatories of the Apostille Convention. The apostille plays a crucial role in international document recognition and trustworthiness of Canadian documents in an international context.

Notaries are not authorized to certify copies of birth or death certificates. Only the agencies issuing these vital records are authorized to do so. Contact the relevant issuing agencies to obtain certified copies.

An affidavit is a written statement of facts made under oath, while a statutory declaration is a written statement of facts made under a solemn declaration. A notary public in Ontario can verify the identity of the person making the statement and witness the signing of the document, after which, the notary will sign, seal and certify the affidavit or statutory declaration. Our notary publics can notarize/commission almost all forms at any government level or for a private institution; such as, but not limited to, Transfer of a Used Motor Vehicle, Principal Residence Attestation and so on.

If a document, such as POA or Will, requires a witness beyond just the notary public, we can provide extra witnesses for an extra charge to appear either in person or online.

Whether an electronic copy of the notarized document or a physical copy is needed will depend on the requirement(s) of the receiving party and the client’s preference. Physical copies can either be picked up in person or mailed out (at an extra charge).
